Internet Phone

If you work from a home office you will likely have a separate phone number for your business calls. Potential customers can feel more reassured if you have a landline number rather than just a mobile but it can be an expensive option with today’s costs for line rental. An affordable alternative is a phone that works through the internet.

The official name for this is VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol). If you have broadband you can have VOIP.

The company I use provides software that you can run on your computer and/or a handset, just as if you were using a normal landline. The advantage of the software is you can install it on your laptop and therefore be able to use it no matter where you travel.

You can use the number that comes with your account or for a small monthly charge you can have a number which contains your choice of an area code such as London. 0845 numbers of also available and for slightly more you can get an 0800 number.

It works like any other phone system with voicemail. You can access voicemail in a number of ways: dialling voicemail from the handset or logging in to your online VOIP account. You’ll also receive an email with the message attached!

The only downside is if your broadband goes down then your phone isn’t usable. But if you have the app installed on your phone and you have 3G/4G you can still make and receive calls!

The company I use is Voipfone. Their customer service is great so if you run into any trouble you can call them, contact them by email or use their online chat.
