I was recently searching for the term “I need a website” and one of the results was an article from Enterpreneur.com entitled “Why do I need a website?”. Interestingly he says:
“That’s a good question. In fact, it’s one of the most important and most frequently asked questions of the digital business age. Before I answer, however, let’s flash back to the very first time I was asked this question. It was circa 1998, during the toddler years of the internet.
“So should your business have a website, even if your business is small and sells products or services you don’t think can be sold online? My answer in 1998 is the same as my answer today: Yes, if you have a business, you should have a website. Period. No question. Without a doubt.”
This got me to thinking about the “toddler years of the internet”. I started making websites in 1999 and I remember at the time it was hard to persuade businesses that they needed a website. I did a search of that time period and came up with nothing until 2001 when results started displaying for the search term “Do I need a website?”.
One website said:
“For most small businesses, a Web site is rapidly becoming a basic requirement of a marketing plan. A simple site helps customers find you
“The simplest possible Web presence is a one-page site that tells people how to find your business in the “real” world. It should include:
- A good Web Address that relates to your company name and business.
- Your business address, complete with directions and a good map.
- Your business phone number, along with fax numbers if relevant.
- Your hours of operation.
- A clear and enticing description of what your business offers to customers.
“Unless you have all the customers you can handle, a Website can be a good marketing investment.”
And another said:
“One of the reasons that small businesses go online is that a well designed website for even a one man business can have just the same presence on the web as a multi-national corporation. Communication, marketing and printing costs are lower too, as is the cost of using full colour. All businesses see it as the key to keeping ahead of the competition. There are other reasons, too numerous to go into here. Don’t think the web is not for you, it is the future. It will change society, it will change our entertainment, and the way we do business.”
I think that last one sums it up especially when we see how far the web has come.
That brings me back to the question Do I need a website? I think the answer is yes. Even if you don’t plan to sell online or either attract customers online, it’s a great tool to promote yourself from offline advertising. For example, you can place a small advert in the local paper or magazine with a link to your website. The website can say so much more than a small advert – what you do; customer recommendations; pictures of your products etc.
