To Template or Not part Deux

Further to the blog post regarding To Template or Not to Template, it seems the powers that be who manage North Korea’s marketing strategy, thought it was a good idea!

The main website for North Korea is based on a template that was bought for $15:

Good economical sense or an embarrassment for such a major power?

For those who do not have a budget that you’d expect a country like North Korea to have, a template website can make economical sense. If you’re interested in a website based on a template design here’s some more info:  http://www.artisanwebsites.co.uk/template-websites.html

5 books website designers should read

Below are a list of 5 books that any web designer should be encouraged to read. While it’s not important to read all it definitely helps. You can just use the internet to advance your skills but there is so much rubbish information out there that by reading a book you don’t have to become a filter for bad information. So with that – onto the list!

Creating a Website – the missing manual

This book I would say is essential. For beginners or experts, there’s so much information in this book it would be hard not to learn something.

Think you need an army of skilled programmers to build a website? Think again. With nothing more than an ordinary PC, some raw ambition, and this book, you’ll learn how to create and maintain a professional-looking, visitor-friendly site. This Missing Manual gives you all the tools, techniques, and expert advice you need.

CSS – the missing manual

Yes, another missing manual. How many manuals have we lost over the years! Another in depth book, this time for CSS. Everytime I skim through this book I learn something new. It’s great if you’re just starting off in the world of CSS but it’s also great as a reference, i’m constantly referring back to it when i’m knee deep in CSS.

Cascading Style Sheets can turn humdrum websites into highly-functional, professional-looking destinations, but many designers merely treat CSS as window-dressing to spruce up their site’s appearance. You can tap into the real power of this tool with CSS: The Missing Manual. This second edition combines crystal-clear explanations, real-world examples, and dozens of step-by-step tutorials to show you how to design sites with CSS that work consistently across browsers. Witty and entertaining, this second edition gives you up-to-the-minute pro techniques.

New Website for Vintage Car Company

We have just completed a new website for The Studley Motor Company who are specialists in Classic & Vintage cars. The website supplies information about the company and shows what cars are available for purchase.

The Cars for Sale page displays pictures of the cars with thumbnails that can be enlarged.  The site is built using a Content Management System and therefore the client is able to update the website themselves – an invaluable tool when dealing with regularly changing content.

Take a look and maybe you will see a car you like or perhaps you’d like a similar website designed!

Do I need a website?

I was recently searching for the term “I need a website” and one of the results was an article from Enterpreneur.com entitled “Why do I need a website?”. Interestingly he says:

“That’s a good question. In fact, it’s one of the most important and most frequently asked questions of the digital business age. Before I answer, however, let’s flash back to the very first time I was asked this question. It was circa 1998, during the toddler years of the internet.

“So should your business have a website, even if your business is small and sells products or services you don’t think can be sold online? My answer in 1998 is the same as my answer today: Yes, if you have a business, you should have a website. Period. No question. Without a doubt.”

This got me to thinking about the “toddler years of the internet”. I started making websites in 1999 and I remember at the time it was hard to persuade businesses that they needed a website. I did a search of that time period and came up with nothing until 2001 when results started displaying for the search term “Do I need a website?”. (more…)

Website re-design for JKS Publications

This project included a slight re-working of the the existing website design to incorporate all 3 books written by experienced teacher and tutor, Jeff Smith.

JKS Publications

The original website focused only on his Fabulous Physics book but needed to be expanded to include the Cracking Chemistry and Brilliant Biology works.

A “buy now” button linking to Google checkout was added to the books so that people can buy them online and immediately download them.

The books are excellent works teaching you all about the 3 sciences – physics, biology and chemistry. They build on the information in a step by step gradient with exercises at the end of each section and a full glossary to define all the terms used.

On a personal note, Jeff tutored my daughter in Biology and took her from a total confusion about the subject to her passing her A level!  Without his help I’m sure this is one subject she would not have succeeded in.
